Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound is a test that uses sound waves to make pictures of the organs inside your pelvis and the lower abdomen. The doctor would use this test to diagnose a condition, especially to check the health of your baby in the womb

A pelvic ultrasound is diagnostic test that produces images to assess the organs and structures within the female pelvis. The ultrasound will provide a quick visualization of the female pelvic organs including the uterus, cervix, vagina, fallopian tubes and ovaries. It uses a transducer that will send out ultrasound waves that will move through the body and to return later then to be processed of which it will be converted by a computer into an image of the organs being examined.

An ultrasound test uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of your internal organs. Imaging tests can identify abnormalities and help doctors diagnose conditions. A transvaginal ultrasound, also called an endovaginal ultrasound, is a type of pelvic ultrasound used by doctors to examine female reproductive organs. This includes the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and vagina.

Your doctor might also recommend a transvaginal ultrasound during pregnancy to:

• monitor the heartbeat of the fetus
• look at the cervix for any changes that could lead to complications such as miscarriage or premature delivery
• examine the placenta for abnormalities
• identify the source of any abnormal bleeding
• diagnose a possible miscarriage
• confirm an early pregnancy

You might get your results immediately if your doctor performs the ultrasound. If a technician performs the procedure, the images are saved and then analyzed by a radiologist. The radiologist will send the results to your doctor.

• cancer of the reproductive organs
• routine pregnancy
• cysts
• fibroids
• pelvic infection
• ectopic pregnancy
• miscarriage
• placenta previa (a low-lying placenta during pregnancy that may warrant medical intervention)

For a pelvic ultrasound, the test will use a transducer which is a device to send the sound waves and to records those waves. The transducer is pressed against the skin, it will send a small pulse of high-frequency sound waves into the body. 

A radiologist will analyze the ultrasound images and send a report to your doctor of which will show any problems with your pelvic organs, blood vessels or unborn baby. The doctor may also recommend other tests to check the health of your pelvic organs such as:

• Hysteroscopy: a procedure of which a thin, lighted device is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus to look for problems in the uterus
• Laparoscopy: a procedure of which a thin lighted tube is inserted through the abdominal wall to view organs in your pelvis
